Inflatable Container Dunnage FAQ

Dunnage Air Bags For Shipping Ocean-going Containers - Frequently Asked Questions

What are Dunnage Air Bags?

Air inflated dunnage bags are used to restrain movement of cargo loads in containers used to ship goods by ship. Air bags fill voids, brace loads, absorb vibrations, and protect your cargo from in-transit damage using less weight than other forms of load-bracing also known as dunnage.

Dunnage air bag restraints are constructed with two primary types of exterior shell. A kraft exterior bag uses multiple layers (2, 4, 6, or 8 plys) of paper over an inflatable internal polyethylene bladder. Polywoven bag construction has varying gauges of polywoven material as an exterior shell and an inflatable internal polyethylene bladder. Dunnage bags are used frequently because they allow for flexible, extremely light-weight and simple blocking and bracing to restrain movement of cargo loads.

Supplied based on multiple levels conforming to international shipping standards, inflatable air bags are manufactured and sold in 5 different configuration levels (L1, L2, L3, L4, and L5), each designed to withstand different force loads in transit. L2 or Level Two is considered appropriate for containers that are cargo on ocean going vessels. Higher level air bags may also be used to restrain cargo container shipments up to 40,000 pounds.

What type of Dunnage Air Bag is recommended for truck shipment?

LEVEL 2 or 4-ply kraft paper air bags.

What are the most common causes of freight damage?

There are 2 extremely common causes of freight damage during shipment in containers. The first is related to freight falling forward or backward due to open areas within a poorly loaded container. The second commonly seen situation is damage related to double and triple decked skids within the cargo container bouncing in transit. The third common damage concern is related to lateral or side-to-side movement during turns while in transit or on-loading / off-loading from the ship.

What are the effects of shifting loads and damaged freight?

Customers are unhappy. Valuable time is wasted putting the damaged freight back together at destination terminals. The necessity for "Re's" (Recouping, Restacking, Re-banding, Re-shrink-wrapping, and Re-working the load) adversely affect dock production and strain customer relations.

How has cargo been braced in the past?

Loads have been braced using a combination of empty pallets, 2 x 4's, and empty cardboard cartons. Shipments which included fragile cargo as part of the overall load necessitated stair-stepping standard freight back-to or away-from the fragile freight.

What are some benefits of bracing loads in trucks using Litco’s dunnage air bags?

The freight shipping industry is in an ever-changing fight for survival. Fuel costs and taxes continue to climb, insurance premiums soar, wage increases and discounts continue to consume your bottom line. Air bag use will have the biggest impact on the load factor (a carrier's largest single expense). Dunnage air bags represent a less expensive means of blocking and bracing than the use of lumber or expensive rubber air bags. This type of operational improvement helps directly maintain and improve profit margins.

Can Dunnage Bags be damaged during filling?

Dunnage Bags can burst with over-inflation. Each bag has a label located near the valve with recommended pressure. If inflation check points are followed, it will eliminate these problems.

Why use Litco Dunnage Air Bags instead of our competitor’s product?

The dunnage air bag market has changed quite a bit in the last few years. LITCO has a team of professionals who stay on top of the changes and make adjustments to provide the best options for you, our customer. To keep in step with eco-friendly practices, most of LITCO's dunnage air bags come with a reusable valve at no additional cost to you, and soon 100% of our air bags will be reusable.
